Nokia N8: The Latest Symbian^3 OS Smartphone



As a leader in the smartphone market, Nokia's dominance has been under increasing pressure in recent years, with so many brand mobile phone manufacturers introducing various “high-end” handsets. In order to regain its reputation, Nokia's gone back to the lab to bring out the Nokia N8, which is definitely one of the most eagerly-anticipated mobile phones on the year. It features the new Symbian^3 OS and a huge amount of high end tech.

At first glance, The Nokia N8 looks simple yet stylish with subtle curves on either side of the casing which is made from anodized aluminium, which gives the phone a solid feeling and makes it comfortable to hold when in either horizontal or vertical position. This mobile phone is available in five colored casings such as blue, orange, dark grey, silver white & green, which makes the N8 stand out in a crowd. Thanks to its well proportioned sizing and overall weight, it is quite easy to hold this phone in a single hand. It measures 11.35cm in height by 5.9cm in width by 1.29cm in depth and weighs 135 grams including its fitted battery.

The front part of the smartphone is dominated by a big AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with just one hardware button below the screen that doubles as both the home and menu keys. The screen measures 3.5 inches and can display 16M colors with a resolution of 360x640 pixels. It looks crystal clear and it feels responsive and accurate. There is a virtual Qwerty keyboard on the screen for typing longer messages. It is quite easy and comfortable to use, especially in landscape mode. What is missing is multi-touch within the messaging apps, so you can use shortcuts like a normal hardware keyboard.

The Nokia N8 is also the first smartphone to run on the new Symbian^3 OS. and while it is not a revolutionary software update, it surely offer lots of improvements over S60. For example, it brings in element of the Maemo UI which is much more usable and stable. Similar to other touchscreen operating systems, the Symbian^3 also has three home screens and each can hold up to 24 widgets, bookmarks and shortcuts. Therefore, You can customize your mobile phone freely

Entertainment wise, the Nokia N8 has a 12MP camera situated on the back of the casing which supports outstanding photo and video capturing capabilities. It can take  some nice and stunning shots. Moreover, there’s also a Carl Zeiss optics that adds to the clarity of the pictures you capture and a Xenon Flash that ensures great quality pictures in low light. Other camera features include 1/1.83'' sensor size, ND filter, geo-tagging, face and smile detection. The camera can record videos at a resolution of 720p at a frame rate of 25fps. There is also a secondary VGA camera on the top right hand corner of this mobile phone which allows you to enjoy a face to face video calling experience. The Nokia N8 supports Dolby Digital Plus which allows you to experience superior quality sound when using the HDMI to playback your videos or photos with sound on a compatible television or projector, this is definitely a welcome feature. And for music experience, you can choose its built in music player and FM radio.

The Nokia N8 presents the best connectivity options with support for USB, Bluetooth, infrared, and Wi-Fi. Networks such as GPRS, EDGE and HSPA are also supported to provide fast access to internet. The built-in GPS receiver with Ovi Maps 3.0 is great for navigation purpose. This handset has incorporated the user friendly social network feature, allowing the user to keep updated from Twitter and Facebook on one easily accessed application. And Its email service is a push email service which is a direct email service and supports Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail and Windows Live.

In terms of the battery life, The Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery provides a standby time of 390 hours for 2G and 400 hours for 3G, talk time of 12 hours 30 minutes for 2G and 5 hours 30 minutes for 3G and an incredible music play time of 50 hours.
