Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed concern today over reports of a new Indian nuclear test in the offing. The reports come following claims by a leading Indian nuclear scientist that the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests were a “fizzle” that failed to meet expectations; a ploy Pakistani experts believe is aimed at presenting the case for a new nuclear test. While the Indians contemplate whether to conduct a new test, the editor-in-chief of a leading Pakistan newspaper said that Pakistan should nuke Indian dams being built on Pakistani rivers. Majid Nizami stated that Pakistan will become a desert if the 62 planned dams are built. There should be no fear of retaliation as Pakistani nuclear weapons are far more sophisticated than their archrival’s he said.
President Asif Ali Zardari had much to fear about though, with polls showing an abysmal 32 percent approval rating for him, while 79 percent of people polled had a favorable opinion of Nawaz Sharif. Experts predict Zardari will not last his full term till 2013.
